Doug was a U.S. Marine!  He served his country in the Cuban Missile Crisis and later his community as commander of VFW 6609 for many years.  He was always ready to march in our parades, participate in a funeral gun salute, or flip pancakes/serve beer at a fundraiser.

Doug was a Mason and active member of Eastern Star.  When the Lodge flooded, he spent many weekends repairing the damage.  He also did a lot of maintenance to the building.

Always ready for a party, he hosted many a VFW and Mason/Star picnic.

He will be missed by his family and many friends.

After retirement and several years traveling around the country, she and Robert came back to Deposit to settle into “retirement”. She was a founder of the Deposit Foundation’s Friendship Meal; a member of the Village Planning Board and the Deposit Foundation for several years, and an active member of Christ Episcopal Church.

Betsy Smith Isroelit

of CA

Betsy Smith Isroelit, a Deposit native (and longtime Deposit Courier subscriber), died on July 11, 2024, from cancer at the age of 81. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends in her home in Los Angeles, California, where for years she ran a successful marketing and communications business.

Her parents, Gene and Betty Smith, were pillars of the Deposit community. Gene served as the town postmaster for more than 30 years and later helped found and run the Deposit Historical Society. Betty ran the audio-visual department at Deposit Senior High School and was a leader in the Deposit chapter of Catholic Daughters of America.

Betsy graduated from Deposit Senior High in 1960 and was admitted to the Honors College at Michigan State University, where she focused on Chinese studies and labor relations. After graduating, she married Joseph McGroarty, and they had two children, Beth and Mark. She later married Ron Isroelit and formed a loving blended family with Ron’s sons, Todd and Sean.

In 1977, Betsy and Ron moved the family to San Diego and picked up work doing television, radio, and print advertising, including campaigns for the San Diego Water Authority and Pete Wilson (the future Governor of California, who at the time was running for Mayor of San Diego). In 1981, they relocated to Los Angeles to pursue larger opportunities. A career highlight was producing the first-ever Super Bowl commercial for an eCommerce company (Autobytel.com,1998). Another was becoming the public relations liaison for the Hollywood Sign, a role Betsy would serve for the rest of her life.

Following Ron’s death from cancer in 2005, Betsy continued to work, earn business, and mentor employees. She also became increasingly active in political and community causes in her beloved Los Angeles neighborhood of Silver Lake. She was elected to the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council, co-founded the Silver Lake Advocacy Team (in partnership with local police leaders), and led wide-ranging efforts to protect the environment and wildlife in the Silver Lake area.

In the later chapters of her life, Betsy became the center of a multi-generational and ever-growing circle of colleagues, friends, and family. The latter included her children, Beth, Todd, Sean, Mark; their respective partners, Ted, Heather, Meghan, and Nicole; her grandchildren, Jessica, Emma, Desmond, and Jude; and her brother Patrick Smith, of Conklin, New York, and his family.

She was a deeply loved mother, mentor, businesswoman, and friend who touched many lives, accomplished many things, and always kept Deposit close to her heart. All will remember her for her intelligence (without pretension), her beauty and style (without vanity), and her talent(without ego) – for her sunny nature and smile, which always lit up the room and will aways warm our hearts.

As she got older she loved to spend her time watching westerns and being with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren having tea parties and watching cartoons together. She completed this part of her journey as she lived it, surrounded by those who loved her, and began the next part of her journey being welcomed with calm peaceful assurance of loving arms.

A Celebration of Her Life will be held on her birthday July 31 at 3:00 p.m. at Three Pines Community Church Pavilion in Doraville. Online condolences may be made at: www.omaddenfh.com. Robert H. Shaffer

Robert H. Shaffer

Robert H. Shaffer

of Bergenfield, NJ

Robert H. Shaffer, from Bergenfield, NJ, died on July 22, 2024, at the age of 86. Born September 25, 1937 to Carl John Shaffer and Marion Elizabeth Shaffer at Somerset Hospital in Somerville, NJ, he was preceded in birth by his older brother, Korean War Veteran Carl Edward Shaffer, in 1930.

Robert graduated from Somerville High School in 1955. He went on to work in the retail industry and managed many stores, including Woolworths, True Value Hardware, Mitchell Simon and County Discount, the latter a popular Northern New Jersey variety store chain where countless teenage kids got their first jobs. A hard-working, dedicated employee, his career spanned over five decades.

In 1965, like something out of a Hollywood movie script, the proverbial sparks flew and the stars aligned when Robert, with his dry sense of humor, met stunner Cathy Smith on a blind date. Two months later, the smitten pair got engaged and six months after they tied the knot. They remained devoted husband and wife until his death, just four days after their 59th wedding anniversary.

Robert loved traveling with his family to Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod, where he honeymooned in 1965. Unsurprisingly, Jaws was one of his favorite movies as was the 1939 classic, Drums Along the Mohawk. He loved spending Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve at his sons’ homes, especially eating delicious home-cooked meals made by his daughters-in-law. For him, it was definitely Wendy’s, McDonald’s and while Big Jim’s was one of his go-to pizza joints, it was the lasagna at Nick’s Pizza that was his favorite. Kit-Kats and Hershey’s Kisses were daily indulgences but no day was complete without some Breyers ice cream.

Family meant everything to Robert. He was proud of his sons, Bobby and Bryan, both college graduates whose careers have spanned more than two decades in the real-estate industry. He enjoyed attending his grandsons’ hockey and baseball games and beamed with pride watching his granddaughters sing and perform on stage.

Perhaps nothing inspired him more than attending church, as he did nearly every Sunday since 1975. He was a treasurer, trustee and deacon at the First Baptist Church in Bergenfield, NJ and later at the Emerson Bible Church in Emerson, NJ. Those who knew him know he was blessed with the gift of prayer. Robert was an eloquent, off-the-cuff orator--never pre-written, always delivered straight from his heart and soul.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Carl.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Cathy; sons: Bobby and Bryan, grandchildren: Samantha, Bret, Alexandra and Gavin; and his daughters-in-law: Kim and Stacey.

Robert loved his family dearly. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Private Services are being held at Hennessey’s Funeral Home, Deposit, NY. Interment will be held in Hale Eddy Cemetery, Deposit.

George David Smith
smith_george_david.jpg
George David Smith

George David Smith

George David Smith, 39, sadly and tragically left this world on the morning of Saturday, September 21, 2024.

George was born on December 2, 1984, to David and Elaine (Jones) Smith at The Hospital in Sidney NY.

George always had an adventurer’s spirit and a smile that could light up a room. When he was little, he would go off with his Grandpa (George) Smith, and they would often find themselves in silly predicaments. Every year, George would help his father and grandfather make maple syrup out of sap. He would race his bike through Oquaga Creek State Park trying to find his dad, who would often be found working in one of the park’s many loops or go on shopping adventures with his mom and sisters. George’s favorite thing to do was hiding in the clothing racks while the girls shopped, and afterwards, he would always choose to go to Ponderosa (he loved buffets). He could also be found making fun videos of ceramic animals with his little sister, Annie, at his grandpa’s house.

George graduated from Bainbridge- Guilford High School in 2003. After graduation, he entered the Marines with his best friend Matt Powers, something that they had been planning and talking about doing for a long time. While in the Marines, George was stationed in Quantico, VA. Here, he earned his CDL and was responsible for bringing home fallen marines when they arrived home from war, and driving dump trucks, and his favorite, tow trucks. George always wanted to make sure that he was doing exactly what was needed from him.

After leaving the Marines in 2007, and making lasting friendships, George decided to continue driving truck out of the Marines for different agencies, such as Willow Run Foods. His family would love it when they received a phone call from him on the road because he would always “honk honk” his horn when he was on the phone with them.

From a young age, George always had quite a strong work ethic. While he may have hated leaving his family for work, he always made sure he gave his job 100 percent. From working in the fast food industry at Wendy’s, helping a neighbor with their grape vines, working at Frog Pond Farms, and driving trucks for different trucking lines (Willow Run Foods, Maines, Lineage Logistics), he did his best to make sure the job was always done right.

George met his true love, Rachel Hares, in 2009. She entered George’s life right when he needed her the most and they have been together ever since. They made the perfect match. He was welcomed into the Hares family with open arms (he was the favorite son-in-law.) Soon his most prized possession would be born, Madyson Smith, in 2010. Maddy meant the world to George and he was so very proud of all of her accomplishments in sports, music, trap shooting and school. Even though he had to spend a lot of time on the road, he would look forward to getting home to “Rachie”, Maddy “Ooga Booga”, and his dog Gus to go off on adventures together.

George encouraged Maddy to try new things in different capacities that she would never have even thought to have done if it wasn’t for him. As a family, they enjoyed doing different things like going to concerts, festivals, camping at Oquaga, playing disc golf (Maddy always got her discs stuck in the trees), going kayaking, fishing, stargazing, making bonfires, creek walking, and swimming. He and Maddy enjoyed going biking, singing, walking, grilling, and making breakfast. George also loved plowing snow, and his plow was drift buster. He was their rock.

George’s family meant the world to him, and he meant the world to them as well. He loved going out to his parent’s house and going fishing and creek walking. He was his parent’s only son (the rose between the thorns), and he and his father had such a close bond.

He had two nieces, Melanie Ward and Penelope Hosmer, and one nephew, Henry Ward. He always loved taking them out to the creek with his daughter, and of the family’s favorite memories being the beaver dam with Melanie, Maddy, Henry, Christine, and Rachel. He would often meet Henry and his father out at Oquaga Creek to fish with them.

He was a beloved Father, Son, Uncle, Husband, and Friend, and he will be greatly missed.

George is predeceased by his grandparents, George Leland and Gerd Smith, and Theodore Jones. He is also predeceased by his uncle, Charles Smith.

He is survived by the love of his life: Rachel Hares; his daughter: Madyson Smith; parents: David and Elaine Smith; sisters: Christine (Gabe) Ward, and Raeann (Daniel) Hosmer; nieces: Melanie Ward and Penelope Hosmer; nephew: Henry Ward; grandmother: Theresa Jones; aunts, uncles, many cousins, The Hares Family, and countless friends.

Visitation was held Friday, September 27 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at CH Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, NY
